CAR: Protests possible through at least late February following arrest of MINUSCA peacekeepers in Bangui, Feb. 21

Protests possible through at least late February following arrest of MINUSCA peacekeepers in Bangui, CAR, Feb. 21.

Informational

Event

Protests are possible in Bangui through at least late February to denounce the presence of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) and perceived French interference into CAR's affairs. On Feb. 21, four French peacekeepers from MINUSCA were arrested at Bangui Mpoko International Airport (BGF). The reasons behind the arrest remain unclear as of Feb. 22; however, it is likely to heighten existing tensions between the population and MINUSCA. If protests materialize, protesters are likely to gather near the French Embassy or the UN headquarter in Bangui.

During protests, authorities will certainly deploy a heightened security presence near protest venues. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all protests due to the likelihood of associated violence. Exercise caution near likely demonstration sites. Leave immediately and take refuge in a secure, nongovernmental building if violence erupts. Monitor local media for details concerning protest activity, as organizers may not announce plans in advance. Follow instructions issued by local authorities.
