Warning

Event

Protest marches are slated to take place nationwide across Chad on Feb. 15. Organizers have planned the action to take place amid a national mourning day following communal clashes in Moyen-Chari Region left up to 15 people dead in recent days. The exact locations nationwide are unclear. However, in N'djamena participants will reportedly gather at the Fest Africa Space and finish at the Paris-Congo Municipal Stadium.

Heightened security and transportation disruptions are likely. Clashes between participants and opposing groups or local security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

Deadly communal violence occurred in Moyen Chari Region in recent days, resulting in the deaths of at least 15 people. The violence involved farmers and herders and was triggered by the death of a local near Sandana.

Communal and inter-ethnic clashes are common in central and southern Chad, primarily in areas impacted by drought and failed harvests. Violence is often triggered by competition over access to water and arable land.

Advice

Exercise caution if operating near affected areas. Reach out to trusted local contacts to determine security conditions, as reporting is often delayed. Carry proper identification documents to present at security checks and heed all official security and transport advisories; remain cooperative if stopped for inspections.
