Chad: Opposition plans anti-government sit-in protests nationwide Feb. 9

Wakit Tama movement plans anti-government sit-in protest across Chad, Feb. 9. Avoid all demonstrations.

Warning

Event

Two opposition groups, Wakit Tama and the Reformist Party (PR), plan to hold anti-government sit-in protests across Chad Feb. 9. The sit-ins will reportedly begin at 10:00 in front of courthouses throughout the country. The purpose of the action is to condemn the arrest of the president of the PR.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy increased security near the sit-ins and in the vicinity of any related protests that may occur elsewhere. Localized transport disruptions are likely near demonstration venues. There is an elevated possibility of clashes with security forces due to the anti-government nature of the event.

Context

Chad's political and security environment remains unstable following the April 20, 2021 death of longtime President Idriss Deby Itno. The appointment of the late president's son, Mahamat Deby Itno, as the head of the CMT, along with the suspension of the constitution and the National Assembly, sparked nationwide anti-government protests. While recent demonstrations have been mostly peaceful, some gatherings have been marred by violence.

Advice

Consult with trusted local sources for updates regarding protests as organizers have not announced all details in advance. Avoid demonstration venues, particularly affected areas of N'Djamena. Keep away from any areas where security forces appear to be deploying; leave the area at the first sign of any confrontation. Allow extra time to reach destinations in central areas of major cities until any protests have concluded.
