Iraq: Iraqi Airways crews plan to strike nationwide from Feb. 24

Iraqi Airways crews plan to strike nationwide across Iraq from Feb. 24. Flight disruptions, associated protests likely.

Warning

Event

Unionized Iraqi Airways (IA) crews plan to strike nationwide from Feb. 24 to protest the worsening economic situation and alleged corruption in the company. The end date of the action is unclear. Organizers have also called for a sit-in protest at Baghdad International Airport (BGW) from 06:00 Feb. 24. Dozens to hundreds of individuals could attend the demonstration.

Unless averted, the work stoppage is likely to result in flight disruptions across Iraq, including delays and cancellations. Police will likely monitor any protests and may try to disperse more disruptive gatherings. Skirmishes between protesters and security forces are possible, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse. Demonstrations and security responses may prompt localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Confirm IA flights during the strike and reschedule flights if necessary. Avoid any protests due to possible violence. If skirmishes break out, vacate the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional time if traveling near BGW.
