New Caledonia: Local leaders threaten to close Lifou's Ouanaham Airport again from Feb. 14
Local leaders threaten to close Ouanaham Airport in New Caledonia from Feb. 14 over health pass dispute. Plan for flight disruptions.
Event
Customs authorities on Lifou Island have threatened to close Ouanaham Airport (LIF, Wanaham Airport) from Feb. 14. Local officials claim the territory government reneged on its promise to cover the cost of COVID-19 tests for unvaccinated people seeking a test to obtain a health pass. Authorities require a health pass for travel. Unless averted, the airport closure will cause flight disruptions, including on Air Caledonie (TY) flights between LIF and Noumea's La Tontouta International Airport (NOU).
Locals could rally at LIF to call more attention to their demand if the closure goes forward. Increased security is possible near the airport as a precaution. Localized transport disruptions may occur, mainly if protests take place.
Advice
Confirm flights if traveling through LIF from Feb. 14. Reschedule flights or make alternative arrangements if the closure occurs. Do not check out of accommodations until verifying onward travel. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
