New Zealand: Activists continue to protest at Parliament House in Wellington as of Feb. 9 /update 1
Activists continue to protest at Parliament House in Wellington, New Zealand, as of Feb. 9. Tight security likely, disruptions ongoing.
Event
Activists opposed to COVID-19 vaccine mandates and restrictions continue to protest at Parliament House in Wellington as of Feb. 9. Around 1,000 demonstrators gathered at the legislative building and parked vehicles on surrounding roads Feb. 8, after driving in convoys from North and South islands. Several hundred activists remain at the site, despite police warnings against camping at the location. It is unclear how long the protesters will continue their demonstration.
Police say they will maintain an increased security presence at Parliament overnight Feb. 9-10. A security cordon is in place around the building. While the demonstration has remained peaceful, officers arrested three people that attempted to get through security barriers the afternoon of Feb. 9. Skirmishes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out if activists try to reach or enter Parliament House. Authorities have warned motorists of traffic congestion surrounding the area, including on Lambton Quay and Bowen and Molesworth streets. Further ground transport disruptions are possible in central Wellington, especially if protesters again use vehicles to block roads. Localized business disruptions remain possible.
Advice
Monitor trusted local sources for updates about protest activity if operating in Wellington as organizers may not publicize additional plans. Avoid the demonstration due to the potential for clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions.
