New Zealand: Activists continue to protest in Auckland and Wellington as of March 1 /update 4
Activists continue to protest in Auckland and Wellington, New Zealand, as of March 1. Tight security, disruptions ongoing.
Event
Activists opposed to COVID-19 vaccine mandates and restrictions continue to protest in Auckland and Wellington as of March 1. Around 200 activists remain near Parliament House in Wellington despite police warnings against camping at the site. Approximately 300 vehicles also remain parked on roads near the area; officials continue to re-rout transport services at the location. Authorities have installed concrete barriers to contain demonstrators and shut down Molesworth Street and other adjacent roads. Scuffles between police and demonstrators have occurred, resulting in minor injuries. Security forces have arrested dozens of people at Parliament House since the protest began. Additionally, dozens of protesters have gathered and set up tents at Auckland Domain; the area remains closed to vehicles due to the action. It is unclear how long the protesters will continue their demonstrations.
A security cordon is in place around Parliament House. Authorities have indicated that they will not clear protesters; however, skirmishes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out if activists try to reach or enter Parliament House. Clashes could also occur if police eventually attempt to disperse or relocate the crowd. Authorities have warned motorists of traffic congestion surrounding the area. Further ground transport disruptions are likely in central Wellington and Auckland Domain. Localized business disruptions remain possible.
Advice
Avoid the demonstration due to the potential for clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Monitor local media for updates about protest activity if operating in Wellington as organizers may not publicize plans. Plan for localized disruptions; confirm appointments nearby and use alternative routes to circumvent the protest site.
