Nigeria: Education staff strike ongoing nationwide as of Feb. 15; related protests possible

Teachers affiliated with ASUU union in Nigeria striking nationwide of Feb. 15. Related protests possible.

Informational

Event

Unionized teachers are maintaining a nationwide strike as of Feb. 15. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), representing university personnel, had called the action from Feb. 14 after the government failed to implement several demands. The work stoppage may last until at least March 14.

Related protests remain possible in the vicinity of education facilities and government buildings. In addition, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has threatened to embark on nationwide protests to denounce the action. Gathering locations may include the ASUU headquarters located near the University of Abuja on Airport Road. Should such gatherings occur, participants may obstruct access to Abuja's Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (ABV).

Heightened security and localized traffic disruptions are likely in the vicinity of all protests. Clashes between rival activists remain possible.

Advice

Avoid all protests to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Depart the area at the first sign of a confrontation. As a precaution, allow extra time at ABV over the coming weeks.
