Dozens of civil society groups have called for nationwide protests Feb. 22 to demand the immediate presidential assent of an electoral bill. In Abuja, participants were slated to gather from 08:00 at the Unity Fountain. Similar gatherings will likely occur in other major urban centers such as Lagos, Kano, and Port Harcourt. Likey protest sites include government buildings and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) offices.

Heightened security and localized traffic disruptions are likely in the vicinity of all protests. Clashes with security forces remain possible.

Context

The proposed electoral bill would allow electronic transmission of results to prevent fraud and strengthen INEC’s financial independence, among other things.

Advice

Avoid all protests to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Depart the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
