Informational

Event

Courier workers from the National Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) plan to protest at Cheonggye Plaza in Seoul from 14:00 Feb. 21. Participants are calling for improved working conditions for delivery workers. Organizers claim that around 2,000 people will participate in the action. Although ongoing COVID-19 restrictions allow at most 299 people to participate in rallies, the union will hold the demonstration in conjunction with an opposition party as ongoing campaign events for the presidential election are exempt from COVID-19 rules.

Officials will almost certainly increase security at Cheonggye Plaza. Security personnel could disperse gatherings if they are disruptive or in violation of COVID-19 gathering restrictions. Clashes between protesters and police are possible, especially if security personnel use force to break up protests. Officials may enact checkpoints and roadblocks depending on the scale of the protest. Transport disruptions affecting subway and bus services may occur. Localized business disruptions are also possible.

Advice

Avoid the demonstration as a security precaution. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protest locations as organizers may not announce them in advance. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near events. Confirm business appointments and transport schedules in advance.
