Chad: Civil society group plans pro-government march in N'Djamena March 6

Activist group plans pro-government march in N'Djamena, Chad, March 6; disruptions likely, clashes possible.

Warning

Event

The Coalition of Civil Society for Citizen Action (CASAC) movement plans to stage a march in N'Djamena March 6. The purpose of the action is to support Chad's Transitional Military Council (CMT). Organizers have announced that the march will begin in front of the Palace of January 15 and end at the Adoum Tchere Roundabout. The demonstration's start time was not immediately announced. The government has reportedly granted CASAC a permit for the gathering to take place.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy a heightened security presence along the march route. Localized transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the demonstration. Clashes between security forces and counter-protesters cannot be ruled out.

Context

Chad's political and security environments have degraded following the April 20 death of longtime President Idriss Deby Itno. The appointment of the late president's son, Mahamat Deby Itno, as the head of the CMT, along with the suspension of the constitution and the National Assembly, have sparked nationwide anti-government protests. While recent demonstrations have been mostly peaceful, at least five protesters died in earlier events.

Advice

Consult with trusted local sources for updates regarding the planned protest march. Avoid demonstration venues through March 6. Keep away from any areas where security forces appear to be deploying; leave the area at the first sign of any confrontation. Allow extra time to reach destinations in N'Djamena until the protest march has concluded.
