France: Climate activists to demonstrate in urban centers March 12

Climate activists to demonstrate in French urban centers March 12; heightened security, localized disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Environmental activists plan to demonstrate in urban centers across France March 12 to demand the government take greater action to address climate change. The largest action will likely be in Paris where activists will gather at Place de la Nation at 14:00 and march to Place de la Republique; attendance will likely be in the thousands. Other large demonstrations are confirmed at the following times and locations:

  • Grenoble: Gare de Grenoble, 14:00

  • Lille: Grand Place, 14:00

  • Lyon: Place Jean Mace, 14:00

  • Marseille: Vieux-Port, 14:00

  • Montpellier: Place de la Comedie, 11:00

  • Nice: Theatre de Verdure, 14:30

  • Strasbourg: Place Kleber, 14:00

  • Toulouse: Allees Jean Jaures, 14:00

Additional demonstrations will take place in further towns and cities nationwide; actions in many locations will take the form of marches through city centers. Attendance will vary by location but will likely be in the high hundreds at larger gatherings.

Additional police will deploy to monitor all actions. Large crowds and associated security measures will likely result in localized transport disruptions; public transport in affected areas could be canceled or diverted. Most actions will pass off peacefully though isolated clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if activists attempt to breach any security cordons.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check for transport disruptions and allow extra time for travel in affected areas.
