Iraq: Iran claims responsibility for missiles that targeted Erbil early March 13 /update 2

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claims responsibility for missiles striking locations in Erbil, Iraq, early March 13.

Warning

Event

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed responsibility for a barrage of missiles that targeted Erbil early March 13. The IRGC stated that it launched the attack against an Israeli "strategic center of conspiracy" in Erbil. The attack against Erbil appears to be in retaliation to an Israeli airstrike in Syria that killed two IRGC operatives earlier in March. The IRGC has warned against further action stating that any repetition of attacks by Israel will be met with a harsh and decisive response.

On March 13, several projectiles were reported to have impacted Erbil. Initial reports indicated that several rockets targeted the vicinity of the US Consulate General in Erbil. Erbil's Governor - Omed Khoshnaw - stated that multiple missiles fell in the vicinity of the US Consulate General and Erbil International Airport (EBL). While there have been no casualties, some material damage has been reported at the media outlet of Kurdistan 24 news studio in the city and other impact sites. Further similar attacks cannot be ruled out.

Context

US officials have condemned the incident calling it an outrageous attack against Iraqi sovereignty. Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi has similarly condemned the attack stating that it is an assault on the security of Iraqis. The attack comes amid talks between the US and Iranian officials in Vienna as both countries are attempting to restore the nuclear deal. While Iran has launched missile attacks against Iraqi bases hosting US personnel in Iraq in the past, this is the first time the IRGC has claimed responsibility for an attack of this nature, indicating Iran's inclination to escalate tensions in order to achieve its regional objectives.
