Event
Authorities are responding to an ammonia leak at the Alliance Group meat processing plant in Lorneville, north of central Invercargill, the afternoon of March 22. Employees reported the leak just after 12:00. Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) staff evacuated a section of the plant and have isolated the area. There were no reports of injuries from the leak.
FENZ says clean-up works will continue through the afternoon. Officials have warned residents in the vicinity to stay inside and keep windows and doors closed while they ventilate the plant. FENZ personnel could also temporarily block roads near the plant, including state highway 99, causing localized transport disruptions.
