Informational

Event

Suspected bandits ambushed the Kebbi State’s deputy governor convoy in Kanya locality, Danko Wasagu Local Government Area (LGA), Kebbi State, March 8. Authorities confirmed the attack March 10 and claimed that hundreds of assailants carried out the raid and that the perpetrators also suffered heavy casualties without providing further details. Officials said at least 19 members of the security forces were also killed in the ambush. The incident follows a similar attack that occurred in the Sakaba LGA of Kebbi State overnight March 6-7, in which armed bandits killed at least 63 members of a vigilante group.

Increased security and related localized disruptions are likely in the area over the coming days. Authorities may enact strict security measures, such as curfews, due to the recent uptick of security incidents.

Context

Nigeria is affected by armed gangs (also called bandits) that engage in cattle rustling, looting, extortion, kidnappings for ransom, among other criminal activities. The threat is elevated in the northwest, where officials have implemented various security measures in recent months (such as increased operations, curfews, and business restrictions) in an attempt to curtail criminal activity. While locals are more likely to be affected, the threat to foreign nationals remains; bandits regularly resort to lethal methods. Foreign nationals may be targeted due to their perceived wealth and vulnerability.

Heed all official directives. Exercise a high degree of vigilance due to the threat of violence and kidnapping. Do not discuss plans and routes publicly. If operating in the area in the long term, vary routes and times of travel and ensure the use of secure transport. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
