Nigeria: Protests likely at Lekki-Lagos tolls, Lagos State, from April 1

Protests likely at Lekki-Lagos tolls, Lagos State, Nigeria, from April 1 ahead of planned toll reopening.

Informational

Event

Protests are likely at the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge and Admiralty Toll Plaza (Lekki Toll Gate), Lagos State, from April 1 to denounce the reopening of tolls by the Lekki Concession Company. Residents and activists have denounced an additional financial burden amid fuel scarcity and increasing consumer prices. They have announced a street campaign to raise awareness among motorists to the issue through April 14.

Should protest actions occur, participants may stage sit-ins, go-slow convoys, or roadblocks to disrupt road traffic. Police forces will deploy to any protest that materializes, notably if protesters cause road congestion. The potential for clashes with security forces is elevated. In October 2020, Nigerian security forces opened fire at protesters at Lekki Toll Gate, killing an unspecified number of persons (casualty toll ranges from two to 12 deaths).

Advice

Avoid all protests and plan accordingly for ground travel disruptions if traveling via Lekki toll gates over the coming days. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Depart the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
