Pakistan: Additional nationwide protests possible as of March 11 after disruptive blockades by political party

Additional political protests possible across Pakistan as of March 11. Increased security, disruptions likely; clashes possible.

Informational

Event

Additional protests by opposition parties are possible across Pakistan as of March 11. Supporters of the opposition Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazlur (JUI-F) party held disruptive protests, shutdown strikes, as well as blockades at key roadways and major intersections the night of March 10. The action followed arrests of its members in Islamabad during a security operation, days after multiple opposition parties filed a no-confidence motion against the ruling Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf (PTI) party. Although JUI-F chief Fazlur Rehman called for a suspension of protests for the morning of March 11, further or renewed protests by opposition parties are possible through at least March 23, when Pakistan will commemorate Pakistan Day.

Popular rally locations include press clubs, government buildings, political party offices, public squares, national monuments, religious sites, major intersections, and checkpoints along highways. The largest gatherings are likely in major cities and may involve several hundred attendees. Demonstrators are likely to block or march on roads, prompting localized transport disruptions. Authorities will almost certainly monitor protests and typically use force to disperse disruptive gatherings. Participants may clash with rival party members and/or police.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately for a safe, nongovernmental building. Do not navigate roadblocks as protestors may attack vehicles. Allow additional travel time near demonstrations, or if traveling to transport hubs like railway stations and airports. Monitor trusted local media for protest details as organizers may not announce them in advance. Confirm business appointments, road status, and transport reservations through at least March 23, especially if operating in major cities. Remain nonconfrontational and present proper identification documents if approached by security personnel. Heed all traffic and security advisories.
