Venezuela: Protests planned in multiple locations nationwide March 9
Retirees and pensioners plan protests across Venezuela March 9. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.
Event
Retirees and pensioners plan to protest in multiple locations across Venezuela March 9. The purpose of the demonstrations is to condemn the perceived inadequacy of a recent wage and pension increase. The following events have been announced:
Caracas: Gathering at the Venezuelan Institute of Social Security (Instituto Venezolano de los Seguros Sociales, IVSS) building at 09:00.
Valera: Gathering at the Rafael Rangel High School at 09:00.
Guayana City: Gathering at the IVSS building at an unspecified time.
Details of other gatherings have as yet not been disclosed; however, organizers are calling for protests to occur at IVSS buildings in all 23 of the nation's states. Attendance will vary, with the largest turnouts likely occurring in major cities such as Caracas. Trade unions, student groups, and civil society organizations could join the action.
Heightened security is likely at all related gatherings. Localized ground travel and business disruptions are likely near any demonstrations that may materialize. Similar protests occurred nationwide Feb. 15 and could recur in the coming weeks.
Advice
Avoid all protests. Plan for ground travel disruptions near gathering sites. Reconfirm the route status before departure.
