Officials are implementing a curfew in Patiala District, Punjab State, through at least 06:00 April 30 following clashes April 29. During the curfew, authorities are imposing Section 144 orders, which ban gatherings of four or more people. Officials are exempting essential services from the curfew. Supporters of the Shiv Sena party clashed with pro-Khalistan activists near the Kali Mata Temple in Patiala city April 29; the Shiv Sena supporters had been holding an anti-Khalistan march. Police fired weapons into the air and used tear gas to disperse crowds. At least two people were injured.

Additional civil unrest cannot be ruled out in the coming days, as groups may organize protests denouncing the violence. Crowds are likely to gather at religious sites, government buildings, public squares, and on major roadways. Gatherings may involve dozens to a few hundred people.

Authorities will likely monitor additional gatherings and may try to disperse especially disruptive crowds. Further clashes between rival activists, as well as between activists and security forces, are possible. Officials may use force, including water cannons and tear gas, to disperse gatherings. Localized business and transport disruptions are likely if further violence breaks out. Authorities may extend the curfew and may also impose other measures, including suspending internet services, if violence continues or escalates.
