Iraq: Dust storms cause casualties and disruptions in northern regions April 7; further adverse weather forecast through April 9
Dust storms cause casualties and ground and air transport disruptions in northern Iraq April 7; further storms forecast through April 9.
Event
Hundreds of people have been hospitalized suffering from respiratory issues and ground and air transport disruptions after significant dust storms struck northern Iraq April 7; authorities have warned that adverse conditions are expected to last through April 9.
Five fatalities have been reported due to respiratory problems in Tuz Khurmatu in Salah al-Din Governorate April 7. As of April 8, 222 people have been hospitalized due to breathing problems in Erbil, 206 in Kirkuk Governorate, and 45 in Sulaymaniyah.
Flights were suspended at Erbil International Airport (EBL) and Sulaymaniyah International Airport (ISU) April 7 due to the lack of visibility caused by the dust storms. Flights at both airports have resumed April 8, although some delays and cancelations are ongoing. Traffic disruptions have also been reported across the region and people have been advised to only travel if necessary. In some areas visibility was reduced to as low as 200 meters (656 feet) April 7. The dust storms are forecast to move to central and southern parts of the country April 9, with some rainfall and possible thunderstorms forecast in northern regions.
Dust storms can reduce visibility, leading to transport disruptions. Hazardous driving conditions are possible and could result in traffic congestion and an increase in vehicle accidents. Further flight delays, diversions, and cancellations are possible at regional airports, including Erbil International Airport (EBL) and Sulaymaniyah International Airport (ISU), during periods of severe dust storm activity. Ground transport disruptions are typically severe during rush-hour periods. Higher-than-normal employee absenteeism is possible in the event of widespread transport disruptions.
Hazardous conditions may prompt school or business closures. Dust storms can also pose a health risk to individuals with pulmonary or respiratory issues, and authorities usually warn persons at high-risk to remain indoors with windows closed during dust storms. Residual business and transport disruptions are possible even after weather conditions improve.
Advice
Monitor local media for updates and related weather advisories. Exercise caution while driving and allow additional time to reach destinations. Confirm flights before checking out of hotels or returning rental cars. Plan for possible delivery delays. If operating in areas affected by dust storm activity, consider remaining indoors when possible. Individuals who must be outdoors should use facemasks and observe other precautions to avoid dust inhalation.
