Nigeria: Education staff strike ongoing nationwide as of April 9; related protests possible /update 1

Teachers affiliated with ASUU union in Nigeria striking nationwide as of April 9. Related protests possible.

Informational

Event

Unionized teachers are maintaining a nationwide strike as of April 9. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), representing university personnel, had called the action Feb. 14 after the government failed to implement several demands. The work stoppage may last until May 14.

Related protests remain possible in the vicinity of education facilities and government buildings. In addition, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on students to protest in recent weeks, including in Abuja, to demand the resumption of academic activities. Organizers encourage participants to continue demonstrations until officials address their demands. Gathering locations may include the ASUU headquarters located near the University of Abuja on Airport Road. Should such gatherings occur, participants may obstruct access to Abuja's Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (ABV).

Heightened security and localized traffic disruptions are likely in the vicinity of all protests. Clashes between rival activists remain possible.

Context

Union representatives announced March 14 an extension of the work stoppage by two months and declared April 8 that an end to the strike remains unlikely in the near term.

Advice

Avoid all protests to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Depart the area at the first sign of a confrontation. As a precaution, allow extra time at ABV over the coming weeks.
