Warning

Event

The Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf (PTI) party plans to hold rallies in multiple cities April 16. The protests are a part of a series of demonstrations across Pakistan led by the former prime minister and PTI leader Imran Khan to denounce the recent collapse of his government. PTI supporters will hold a rally at Karachi’s Mazar-e-Quaid 21:00. The PTI will also hold rallies where supporters can watch former prime minister Imran Khan give a televised speech; those venues include:

  • Islamabad: Fatima Jinnah Park, 20:30

  • Lahore: Liberty Chowk, 20:30

Such rallies may also occur in other cities and towns. Thousands of people may attend gatherings, prompting security measures and localized disruptions. Additional protests against the fresh government under current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif are possible in other cities and towns at political party offices, public squares, and major traffic intersections ahead of, during, and immediately after rallies. Counter-demonstrations may also occur.

Heightened security is almost certain in and around rally venues, and any other protest sites. Typical security measures include bolstered security deployment, road closures, entry and exit controls along access roads to cities where rallies are planned, as well as personnel and vehicle checks. Localized transport disruptions are likely as attendees reach and leave venues. Activists may also march or hold vehicle convoys to the event sites from various locations and/or block nearby roadways. Authorities have used force to disperse earlier gatherings that have been especially disruptive. PTI supporters may clash with police and/or rival party members.

Advice

Avoid any rallies due to possible violence. Avoid navigating roadblocks as a precaution. Confirm business appointments, road status, and travel reservations in cities where rallies are occurring April 16; plan for travel delays and possible business disruptions. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter at a safe non-government building. Monitor trusted local media for updates as organizers may change plans at short notice or hold unannounced gatherings. Follow all security and traffic advisories.
