Peru: Disruptions related to truck drivers' nationwide strike likely through at least April 4 /update 2
Overland travel disruptions due to protests related to truck drivers' nationwide strike likely in Peru through at least April 4.
Event
Disruptions due to protests related to truck drivers' nationwide strike remain likely through at least April 4. While the strike is being adhered to by truck drivers throughout Peru, protests are particularly disruptive in Junin Region; in Huancayo, the regional capital, protesters looted stores, set fires, and clashed with police.
Elsewhere, truck drivers disrupted traffic on at least 36 major routes across the country, especially those in Junin, Cusco, Chimbote, San Martin, Puno, Abancay, and Arequipa. In the capital, Lima, several bus companies have stopped intercity services and some supermarkets reported shortages of certain goods.
Despite the government claiming to have reached an agreement with truck drivers, some participants could continue to protest and block roads. Security personnel will likely deploy to manage any associated gatherings. Further shortages of goods are possible if the protests continue to cause overland travel disruptions.
Context
The nationwide strike was organized by various transport unions, including the National Association of Freight Carriers, and began March 28 to denounce high fuel costs. Some unions, including Arequipa Truckers' Union and the National Land Transport Council, have not joined the action.
Advice
Monitor developments with trusted contacts. Prepare for possible shortages if the strike is protracted or gains wider support. Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Plan for possible road travel delays near protest sites.
