US Embassy warns of protests planned for Lima, Peru, April 9. Avoid all protests.

The US Embassy in Lima has issued a warning over protests planned to occur in the greater Lima area April 9. According to the embassy, protesters will gather at multiple points during the day, and from 16:00 begin to march towards Plaza San Martin. The following gatheirng points are noted in the warning:

  • Molina Plaza, La Molina

  • Ovalo Higuereta, Surco

  • Parque Kennedy, Miraflores

  • Avenida Arequipa and Javier Prado, San Isidro

  • Ministerio de Cultura, San Borja

  • Avenida Universitaria and Avenida La Marina, San Miguel

  • Plaza Norte, Los Olivos

  • Parque Zonal Huiracocha, San Juan de Lurigancho

  • Estadio Monumental, Santa Anita

  • Campo de Marte, Jesus Maria

Security personnel will almost certainly deploy to manage any demonstrations and marches; given the number of gathering points, localized disruptions are likely in multiple areas of Lima April 9. In addition, clashes between police and protesters are possible, especially if protesters become overly disruptive, block roads, erect roadblocks, or refuse police orders to disperse.

Advice

Avoid all protests and concentrations of security personnel as a standard precaution. Plan for major ground travel delays. Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks; wait for police to dismantle them instead. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a nongovernmental building.
