PT: Heightened security likely over coming days in Jenin following reports of armed clashes with Israeli security forces April 12

Heightened security is likely in Jenin, West Bank, following armed clashes between Israeli security forces and militants April 12.

Warning

Event

Israeli security forces will almost certainly maintain increased security in Jenin, West Bank, over the coming days following armed clashes between security forces and armed assailants April 12. Israeli-led security operations and counterterrorism raids have been ongoing across Jenin and the surrounding area for the past four days; Israeli authorities have barred most travel to and from Jenin.

Security measures are likely to result in localized transport and business disruptions. Additional clashes and confrontations between militants, protesters, and Israeli security forces cannot be ruled out in the near term. Militants may also target Israeli checkpoints and patrols with gunfire and improvised explosives, posing a risk to bystanders. Clashes with protesters are especially likely if protesters are overly disruptive or fail to adhere to police instructions. Security forces often respond to demonstrations with tear gas, stun grenades, and other riot control measures.

Context

Israeli security forces have conducted several counterterrorism operations in Jenin and the surrounding area after an armed assailant from the district shot and killed three people in Tel Aviv on April 8. The raids are a part of 'Operation Break the Wave,' a wider counterterrorism operation launched by Israeli authorities in response to a series of terror attacks in recent weeks. Following the announcement, the Jenin Brigade – a faction within the Palestinian Islamic Jihad – announced a general mobilization of its forces against Israeli security personnel in the surrounding area April 10.

Advice

Consider avoiding nonessential travel to the Jenin area until the situation stabilizes. Exercise caution and allow extra time for travel throughout the affected area. Seek updated information on security conditions and possible movement restrictions before traveling. Do not attempt to bypass security checkpoints; even an accidental breach of the security cordon near a checkpoint may prompt a response from Israeli security forces. Avoid all protests.
