Senegal: Civil society groups plan protest over health care deficiencies in Dakar at 10:00 April 23

Activists to protest at Place de la Nation in Dakar, Senegal, over healthcare deficiencies at 10:00 April 23.

Informational

Event

Civil society groups have called for a sit-in protest at the Place de la Nation (also called Place de l'Obelisque) in Dakar from 10:00 April 23. Participants will denounce overall alleged medical negligence following the death of a pregnant woman at the Ahmadou Sakhir Mbayin Hospital of Louga, Louga Region. Similar actions are possible nationwide, notably in Louga, where a large turnout was reported at a similar demonstration April 15. Likely protest locations include the Ahmadou Sakhir Mbayin Hospital. Thousands of people may attend the event.

Road transport delays are likely in the vicinity of the gathering. Police forces will likely deploy to monitor the protest. Similar demonstrations have passed largely peacefully.

Context

The Health Ministry (Ministere de la Sante et de l'Action Sociale) launched an inquiry to determine the cause of death and responsibilities to quell popular anger. However, a prolonged and wider movement may persist if the government fails to address the grievances.

Advice

Avoid all protests and plan accordingly for ground travel disruptions. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Depart the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
