Political activists to gather at Place de la Nation in Dakar, Senegal, from 10:00 April 16.

Informational

Event

The COCICOD (Collectif pour la liberation de Cheikh Oumar Diagne) civil society group has called for a protest in Dakar April 16 to demand the release of an anti-Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) rights activist. Cheikh Oumar Diagne had recently been arrested and sued for defamation and public insults. Participants will gather from 10:00 at Place de l'Obelisque (also called Place de la Nation).

Security forces will likely deploy to Place de l'Obelisque to monitor the gathering. Localized traffic disruptions are likely in the vicinity. Clashes with security forces or rival activists are possible. Further protests may occur over the coming days and weeks to press the release of the activist.

Advice

Avoid the protest and plan accordingly for ground travel disruptions. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Depart the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
