South Korea: Activists plan rallies in Seoul April 20-21

Activists call for rallies in areas of Seoul, South Korea, April 20-21. Increased security likely; disruptions possible.

Civil activists, including those affiliated with the Solidarity Against Disability Discrimination group, plan to hold rallies in areas of Seoul April 20-21. Participants intend to mark the Day for the Elimination of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities April 20. On April 20 organizers plan to hold a rally outside the Eroom Center in the Yeouido Nongjangjang area from 13:00 before marching towards the Democratic Party of Korea headquarters, also located in Yeouido. Activists also plan to gather at Gyeongbokgung Station from 21:00. On April 21, a rally is planned outside the National Palace Museum of Korea at 10:00. Dozens to several hundred people will likely attend individual gatherings.

Authorities will likely monitor rallies and may try to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Minor skirmishes between activists and police are possible. Localized transport disruptions are likely in the Yeouido area during the march April 20. Rallies, especially the one planned at Gyeongbokgung Station, may prompt rail service disruptions. Gatherings at other locations may also prompt localized traffic disruptions.
