South Korea: Bus drivers plan to strike in multiple regions April 26

Bus drivers plan to strike in multiple regions across South Korea April 26. Transport disruptions likely. Related protests may occur.

Informational

Event

Unionized bus drivers from the Korean Automobile and Transport Workers' Federation plan to strike April 26 to demand increased wages. Organizers state that the strike will take place in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, and Gwangju cities, and in Gyeonggi, North Chungcheong, North Jeolla, South Jeolla, and South Gyeongsang provinces; drivers in other parts of South Korea could also participate in the action. Reports indicate that drivers in Suncheon have begun to strike as of April 21; local authorities have deployed non-union bus drivers and increased taxi operations to cope with the disruptions.

Bus service disruptions and increased demand for alternative transport are likely. Crowded conditions are also possible on alternative bus routes and other mass transit services. Travelers could also rely on private vehicles, potentially increasing traffic congestion, especially in urban areas.

Striking drivers may hold associated protests. While the union has not announced protest plans, drivers may demonstrate at bus depots, government buildings, and major roadways. Any protests that occur may involve dozens to a few hundred people. Police will likely monitor demonstrations that occur and may try to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Localized traffic disruptions are possible near protest sites.

Advice

Monitor bus service schedules and seek alternative means of transport if necessary. Avoid any related protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional time to reach destinations due to possible increased traffic congestion and higher demand for alternative transport services.
