Venezuela: Severe weather forecast across multiple regions through at least May 1
Severe weather forecast across much of Venezuela through May 1; disruptions due to flooding ongoing in parts of Merida and Zulia states.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (INAMEH) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall across much of Venezuela through at least May 1. Over 10 cm (4 inches) of rainfall is possible in the Zulia, Andes, Western and Central plains, North Central, Amazon, and southern Bolivar regions. Flood-related disruptions are ongoing in several states due to high river levels following previous heavy rainfall. Further downpours could exacerbate the situation in areas where the ground is already saturated by recent heavy rainfall and trigger additional flooding in low-lying and riverine areas, as well as landslides on unstable slopes.
In Zulia State, rising water levels in the Zulia River caused the collapse of a dam in Catatumbo Municipality April 24, leading to flooding in Catatumbo, Colon, and Francisco Javier Pulgar municipalities. Previous heavy rainfall triggered flooding in Sucre Municipality, affecting around 30,000 people. Flooding and power outages have also been reported in Lagunillas and Valmore Rodriguez municipalities in recent days.
Flooding was also reported in parts of Merida State April 22 after heavy rainfall caused the overflow of the Montalban River. A number of roads in the state have been blocked by landslides and debris carried by floodwaters. Several houses were inundated by floodwater in the town of Salado Alto and the population of Ejido has been left without water supply.
Hazardous Conditions
Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where the soil has become saturated by heavy rainfall.
Authorities could issue mandatory evacuation orders for flood-prone communities over the coming days. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are possible where significant flooding or landslides impact utility networks.
Transport and Utilities
Floodwaters could render some bridges, rail networks, or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in the affected area. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters. Flight delays and cancellations are also possible at regional airports.
Disruptions triggered by inclement weather and resultant hazards, such as flooding, could persist well after conditions improve - it could take days for workers to clear debris after floodwaters recede. If there is severe damage to infrastructure, repair and reconstruction efforts may exacerbate any residual disruptions. Electricity and telecommunications services outages are possible where significant flooding or landslides have occurred.

Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions where flooding has been forecast. Do not drive on flooded roads. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
