Flooding ongoing in Hay River Town, Northwest Territories, Canada, as of May 12. Evacuations and disruptions ongoing.

Warning

Event

Flooding is ongoing in Hay River Town, Northwest Territories, as of May 12. Ice blocking the channels along Hay River broke away May 11, sending accumulated water toward the town. Authorities have issued evacuation orders for all the residents in Hay River Town. They also advise individuals evacuating to Enterprise to move to Yellowknife instead due to road closures at Enterprise. Additionally, authorities urge residents still in Hay River Town to remain in their current accommodations due to hazards throughout the town. The Hay River/Merlyn Carter Airport (YHY) road is impassable.

Evacuation orders are also in place for all residents in Old Village and Lower Village/Wolf Drive Area of K’atlodeeche First Nation May 7. An evacuation shelter is located at the Dene Wellness Centre.

Authorities in Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement issued a local emergency alert May 8 due to very high river levels from rain and snowmelt. Reports indicate water supply disruptions to several homes in the settlement. Floodwaters have also damaged several bridges.

Power outages and disruptions to telecommunications services are possible where significant flooding has impacted utility networks. Potential additional rainfall could exacerbate existing disruptions, particularly in areas where the ground is already saturated. Flooding could block regional rail lines; freight and passenger train delays and cancellations are likely in areas that experience heavy rainfall and track inundation.

Advice

Monitor local media for weather updates and related advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions where flooding has occurred. Do not drive on flooded roads. Charge battery-powered devices in case of prolonged electricity outages. Confirm alternative water supplies for business operations.
