A magnitude-5.2 earthquake occurred in southwestern Atacama Region, Chile at around 23:47 CLT May 23. The epicenter was about 56 km (35 miles) north-northwest of Vallenar, Chile. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 47 km (29 miles), and light shaking was probably felt throughout Atacama and northern Coquimbo regions in Chile as well as far northern San Juan, far western La Rioja, and far southwestern Catamarca provinces in Argentina. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
