Informational

Event

The African Union (AU) Extraordinary summits will take place in Malabo May 27-28. An Extraordinary Humanitarian Summit and Pledging Conference will occur May 27, with the Extraordinary Summit on Terrorism and Unconstitutional changes in Africa occurring May 28. The sessions will take place in the Conference Center of Sipopo. Numerous dignitaries, including heads of state, ministers, and other senior officials, from nations across Africa will attend. Hundreds of other delegates, business leaders, and journalists will also likely travel to the capital for the summits.

Authorities will almost certainly increase security throughout Malabo leading up to and during the event. Police and military personnel are likely to establish particularly tight security near the Conference Center of Sipopo, as well as hotels and foreign embassy residences where participating delegations will be staying. Authorities may close roads with a little-to-no warning in order to facilitate the movement of dignitaries' motorcades. Residents and businesses located near summit-related venues could be subject to heightened scrutiny and some movement restrictions.

Officials will likely bolster security at major transport hubs in the city. Additional security procedures at Malabo International Airport (SSG) could prompt flight delays, as well as long waits to clear security and customs, particularly on dates that visiting dignitaries are arriving at or departing the summits. Increased security measures may include stricter baggage checks, random physical searches, and enhanced document screening.

Demonstrations are unlikely during the Summits, but minor protests cannot be entirely ruled out. If any rallies occur, police will move quickly to disperse protesters. Officers could use force - including water cannon and tear gas - and conduct mass arrests to break up gatherings.

Advice

Allow extra time to reach destinations near the Conference Center of Sipopo through May 29. Heed all instructions of local authorities. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by law enforcement officers. Plan for localized disruptions. Keep away from any protests that materialize.
