India: Water tanker drivers' strike prompting supply disruptions in Mumbai as of May 13

Water tanker drivers' strike prompting supply disruptions in Mumbai, India, as of May 13. Commercial disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

An indefinite strike by the Water Tankers Association in Mumbai is causing citywide water supply disruptions as of May 13. Over 1,500 tankers have suspended services to denounce new government rules requiring no-objection certificates for groundwater extraction, and obligating tankers to supply only potable water. It is not immediately clear when the water supply will normalize; disruptions can last several days.

Users are likely to face disruptions as most water suppliers across Mumbai are participating in the work stoppage. Business disruptions are possible, especially for companies that rely on large quantities of water, including non-potable water. Prolonged and recurrent water supply disruptions are possible in the coming days.

Striking tanker operators may protest outside government buildings, as well as use vehicles to block major roadways. Groups affected by water supply shortages may also protest at public squares and near government buildings, especially if the strike is prolonged. Increased security is likely at any large gathering; police could forcibly disperse any disruptive demonstration.

Advice

Stock up on drinking water in advance. Minimize nonessential water use. Confirm alternative water supplies for business operations. Use bottled water from reputed suppliers for drinking and hygiene purposes.
