Iraq: Disruptions ongoing in multiple regions due to dust storm as of May 5
Dust storm causes casualties and travel disruptions across multiple governorates of Iraq as of May 5; further storms forecast through May.
Event
A severe dust storm is causing disruptions across many areas of Iraq as of May 5. The dust storm is moving over central and southern parts of the country May 5, having impacted western Al Anbar Governorate and parts of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in northern Iraq May 4-5. The storm is forecast to move southwards throughout the day, becoming less severe as it reaches the southern governorates. This is the latest in a series of dust storms to impact the country over recent weeks and forecasters have warned that further storms are likely at least through the rest of May.
Speed restrictions have been placed along sections of the Kirkuk-Baghdad highway in Diyala Governorate May 5 and reduced visibility has also been reported on many other roads further south, including the Nasirayah-Samawa highway between Dhi Qar and Al Muthanna governorates and on the Basra-Dhi Qar highway. Authorities in some of the worst-affected governorates, including Al Anbar and Kirkuk, have urged the population to stay indoors and shelter until the storm has passed. Flights have been suspended at Al Najaf International Airport (NJF) and Sulaymaniyah International Airport (ISU) May 5. The dust storm entered Baghdad early May 5; however, Baghdad International Airport (BGW) has stated that flights are operating as normal after they were suspended during a previous dust storm May 3.
Over 1,000 people are reported to have been admitted to hospital due to respiratory issues due to the dust storm. This includes over 700 cases in Al Anbar Governorate, over 300 in Salah al Din Governorate and around 100 cases in both Al-Qadisiyah and An-Najaf governorates. Yarmouk Hospital in Baghdad reported around 600 cases as of May 5.
Dust storms can reduce visibility, leading to transport disruptions. Hazardous driving conditions are possible and could result in traffic congestion and an increase in vehicle accidents. Flight delays, diversions, and cancellations are possible at airports across Iraq during periods of severe dust storm activity. Ground transport disruptions are typically severe during rush-hour periods. Higher-than-normal employee absenteeism is possible in the event of widespread transport disruptions.
Hazardous conditions may prompt school or business closures. Dust storms can also pose a health risk to individuals with pulmonary or respiratory issues, and authorities usually warn persons at high risk to remain indoors with windows closed during dust storms. Residual business and transport disruptions are possible even after weather conditions improve.
Advice
Monitor local media for updates and related weather advisories. Exercise caution while driving and allow additional time to reach destinations. Confirm flights before checking out of hotels or returning rental cars. Plan for possible delivery delays. If operating in areas affected by dust storm activity, consider remaining indoors when possible. Individuals who must be outdoors should use facemasks and observe other precautions to avoid dust inhalation.
