Israel, PT: Tensions remain elevated after Palestinians and Israeli security personnel clash in East Jerusalem May 16
Palestinians and Israeli security personnel in East Jerusalem, Palestinian Territories, May 16. Heightened security likely.
Event
Tensions remain considerably elevated in East Jerusalem after Israeli security forces clashed with Palestinian mourners attending the funeral of a deceased activist during the evening of May 16. While details as yet remain unclear, preliminary information indicates that the violence initially broke out near the Damascus Gate. According to authorities, six Israeli police officers were injured and 15 Palestinians were arrested during the incident; the Palestinian Red Crescent estimates that 71 Palestinians were injured.
Israeli authorities will almost certainly maintain very tight security in East Jerusalem, and particularly in the vicinity of the Temple Mount/Al-Haram ash-Sharif compound, over the coming days. Transport disruptions will probably affect areas of East Jerusalem around the flashpoint sites. Further clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinians are possible in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. Israeli authorities may enact further restrictions on Palestinian movement within the West Bank and East Jerusalem with little advance warning.
Advice
