New Caledonia: Bus drivers' strike affecting some routes in Noumea as of May 17
Bus drivers continuing strike in Noumea, New Caledonia, as of May 16. Plan for some route disruptions.
Event
Bus drivers for transport provider GIE Karuia are striking as of May 17 to push for better working conditions and other demands. Approximately 30 employees, or 25 percent of Karuia drivers, are participating in the action. The drivers are gathering at the Ducos roundabout daily during the work stoppage. Although violence is unlikely, localized traffic disruptions cannot be ruled out.
The labor action, which began May 16, is affecting Taneo D4, N1, N2, N5, and N6 bus services, especially during rush hours. Increased demand for alternative transport is likely. Crowded conditions are also possible on alternative bus routes. Some commuters could resort to using their private vehicles, potentially increasing traffic congestion.
Advice
Confirm bus schedules in affected areas. Seek alternative transport, if needed. Allow additional time to reach destinations due to possible increased traffic congestion and higher demand for alternative transport services.
