Unionized healthcare workers carrying out labor action in New Zealand as of May 9. Strike planned May 16; protests possible.

Informational

Event

Unionized healthcare workers under the Public Service Association have launched a labor action May 9-19 to demand better pay and working conditions. Some 10,000 employees working as anesthetic and sterile sciences technicians, oral therapists, and others are participating in the action. Employees in the affected fields will only work contracted hours and take all entitled breaks, possibly causing service delays.

Employees have also voted for a 24-hour strike May 16. However, District Health Boards are reportedly planning to present a new agreement to the union in the coming days, potentially ending the dispute. Unless averted, the strike may cause more widespread medical service disruptions, especially for non-urgent procedures.

Healthcare workers may hold rallies across the country during the strike. Demonstrations are most likely at medical facilities and government buildings, especially at the Ministry of Health in Wellington. Participants may hold marches; localized transport disruptions are possible, though processions may move along sidewalks. Security personnel will likely monitor larger gatherings. Demonstrations will probably proceed peacefully.

Advice

Confirm medical appointments through May 19 as a precaution. Plan for medical service delays. If possible, contact healthcare facilities in advance for information about wait times, which could vary among hospitals and clinics. Exercise caution near any protests. Allow additional travel time near large rallies.
