Nigeria: Officials ban commercial motorcycles in six LGAs in Lagos State from June 1

Officials ban commercial motorcycles in six LGAs in Lagos State, Nigeria, from June 1. Related protests possible.

Informational

Event

Lagos State officials will prohibit commercial motorcycles, known as Okada, in six Local Government Areas (LGA) from June 1, citing safety reasons. Affected LGAs include Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Surulere, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, and Apapa. Authorities had previously failed to implement similar restrictions and warned that the new measure would be strictly enforced.

As a result, thousands of commuters and transport employees will be affected. Related protests remain possible across Lagos before and after June 1. Participants may obstruct road traffic. Police forces will forcibly disperse any such gathering.

Advice

Follow all local regulations. Avoid all protests. Depart the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
