Nigeria: Political gatherings likely nationwide through at least June 1 amid elections
Political gatherings likely across Nigeria through at least June 1 amid elections. Violence possible.
Event
Political gatherings and increased partisan activities are likely nationwide through at least June 1 amid primary elections. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will hold primary elections for Governorship and State House of Assembly May 26, Senate May 27, and House of Representatives May 28, while the primary for the upcoming 2023 presidential election will take place at the Eagle Square in Abuja May 29, 30. The main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has held primaries at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja, except for the presidential primary scheduled May 28-29.
In the run-up to and during the election, a heightened security presence is likely in the vicinity of large-scale electoral-related events and polling stations. Election-related violence is possible, as witnessed during previous elections, along with reports of voters being intimidated by criminals and security operatives. Political tensions and related unrest, fatal clashes, and alleged abductions have been reported across several states in recent weeks. Disruptions to transport and businesses, and other services are possible on polling day.
Advice
Remain apprised of the political situation, avoid all public demonstrations and political gatherings as a precaution, avoid discussing politically sensitive topics in public, and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities.
