Pakistan: Authorities tightening security in Punjab and Sindh provinces as of May 24 due to possible militant attacks

Officials enhancing security in Punjab and Sindh provinces, Pakistan, as of May 24 due to possible militant attacks.

Warning

Event

Officials are tightening security in Punjab and Sindh as of May 24. Authorities are enacting the measures due to militants possibly targeting protests. Both provincial governments tightened security ahead of the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf (PTI)'s planned march towards the Srinagar Highway in Islamabad May 25. Officials in both provinces have issued Section 144 orders, which prohibit gatherings of five or more people. The Section 144 orders are in effect in Punjab through at least May 30 and in Sindh through at least June 22.

Security personnel will likely maintain heightened security at possible militant targets across both provinces, such as government buildings and popular protest sites. Police may set up roadblocks and security checkpoints near sensitive areas, causing localized transport disruptions. Police may also conduct precautionary measures, such as evacuations and search operations, possibly causing localized business and transport disruptions.

Protests supporting or opposing the PTI are possible despite the gathering restrictions. The US Embassy has issued an alert for likely protests in Punjab. Authorities will likely try to disperse any protests that break out. Clashes between protesters and police, as well as between supporters of rival groups, are possible. Violence may prompt officials to enforce other enhanced security measures, including suspending internet and telecommunications services and enforcing curfews, if disruptive protests break out.

Advice

Anticipate short-notice transport and business disruptions. Allow additional travel time near roadblocks and checkpoints. Carry personnel identification documents. Report any suspicious activity or objects to authorities. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel. Avoid protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building.
