Pakistan: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party plans rallies in several cities of Punjab Province, from Oct. 11

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party to protest across Punjab Province, Pakistan, from Oct. 11. Security curbs, disruptions, clashes likely.

Warning

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has called for protests in multiple parts of Punjab Province from Oct. 11. The action is part of an ongoing series of rallies to mobilize support for imprisoned leader Imran Khan and denounce proposed constitutional amendments that will allegedly undermine the independence of the judiciary. Additional demonstrations are likely in the coming weeks. Announced events include:

  • Oct. 11: Multan and Sahiwal

  • Oct. 12: Gujranwala and Sargodha

  • Oct. 13: Dera Ghazi Khan

  • Oct. 14: Faisalabad and Lahore

Although specific locations and start times for events are not immediately clear, potential gathering sites include press clubs, monuments, sports grounds, government buildings, public squares, and thoroughfares at district headquarters. Rallies usually occur after congregational prayers in the afternoon. A few hundred people typically attend smaller gatherings. Due to legal orders or security measures, protest plans are subject to change at short notice.

Authorities usually enforce Section 144 orders prohibiting unauthorized public gatherings and deploying police, paramilitary, and military officers to prevent rallies. Security forces will likely monitor events and have used force such as batons and tear gas to disperse previous rallies. Traffic restrictions and security checks are probable in Rawalpindi and other major cities; preventive arrests of PTI leaders are likely. Clashes between police and activists, as well as incidents of arson and vandalism, remain possible, especially if authorities attempt to disperse crowds forcibly. Temporary mobile internet curbs and restrictions affecting social media and messaging applications may occur in the event of significant violence.

Activists will likely hold marches or vehicle processions along roadways, including interprovincial highways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Localized business disruptions may occur; officials have previously closed schools and curtailed public transport services during large rallies in urban centers.

Avoid all demonstrations due to the threat of violence. Depart the area for a secure building at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan for ground travel delays and business disruptions in cities. Monitor trusted local media as organizers may announce or change protest plans at short notice. Heed all official traffic and security advisories.
