Activists plan to hold a series of demonstrations May 13 to denounce proposed changes to the national education policy. Organizers have announced actions in the following locations:

  • Arequipa: Plaza Espana from 17:00

  • Bagua: Plaza de Armas Heroes de Cenepa from 17:00

  • Cajamarca: Plaza de Armas from 17:00

  • Cusco: Plaza Limacpampa from 16:30

  • Huancayo: Estadio Mariscal Calista from 16:00

  • Iquitos: Plaza de Armas de Iquitos from 18:00

  • Lima: Plaza San Martin from 17:00. The demonstration will then proceed on Avenida Tacna, Avenida Wilson, and Avenida Abancay before ending in front of University Park.

  • Madre de Dios: Plaza de Armas from 17:00

Additional gatherings are likely in other urban areas nationwide. Heightened security and localized traffic disruptions are likely. Clashes between police and protesters are possible.

Context

Demonstrators from 40 different organizations are protesting proposed changes to Peru's education policy that would remove aspects of sex education, allow parental vetoes of teaching materials, and reconstitute the Board of Directors of the National Superintendence of Higher University Education (Sunedu).
