Indigenous activists from the Awajun (Aguaruna) community are planning a protest to shut down Pumphouse 5 on the Norperuano Pipeline in Manseriche District, Loreto Department, May 20. The demonstrators are demanding that Petroleum of Peru (Petroleos del Peru, PETROPERU), Peru's state oil corporation, provides facilities and give a greater involvement in the functioning of pipeline to the Awajun people. The protesters say they will turn off the engines of the pumphouse if their demands are not met.

Context

Pumphouse 5 is at a key junction on the Norperuano Pipeline, which delivers crude oil from the interior of Loreto Province to the Peruvian coast. Disruptions to this pipeline could disrupt the extraction and delivery of oil from northeastern Peru.
