Timor-Leste, Indonesia: 6.1-magnitude earthquake strikes eastern Timor-Leste May 27 /update 1

6.1-magnitude earthquake strikes eastern Timor-Leste at around 11:36 TLT May 27. BMKG issues tsunami advisory.

Critical

Event

A magnitude-6.1 earthquake occurred in eastern Timor-Leste at around 11:36 TLT May 27. The epicenter was about 36 km (22 miles) northeast of Lospalos. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 51 km (32 miles), and moderate shaking was likely felt throughout far eastern Timor Leste, while light shaking was probably felt throughout the rest of Timor Leste as well as far southern Maluku Province in Indonesia. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, significant damage is possible, especially in far eastern Timor Leste. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light to moderate aftershocks are likely over the coming days.

While the temblor did not immediately trigger the US Tsunami Warning System to issue a tsunami warning, advisory, watch, or threat, BMKG authorities have cautioned that the earthquake may nonetheless be capable of generating a tsunami affecting the Indian Ocean region. Officials are continuing to monitor the situation.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.

Advice

Move away from the immediate coastline; tsunamis can be long-duration events, and the threat may persist for hours. Vacate multistoried buildings or unreinforced structures in areas where strong shaking occurred; aftershocks could cause additional damage. Cellular networks may be overwhelmed; use text messaging if services are available. Due to the threat of landslides, seek updated information on road conditions before driving in hilly areas in the affected area.

Plan accordingly for aftershocks. Consider vacating multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Allow additional time for air and road travel, as aftershocks may prompt brief disruptions. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving in hilly areas in the affected region due to potential landslides.
