Informational

Event

Activists affiliated with the National Union of Students (Uniao Nacional dos Estudantes, UNE) and other allied student organizations and education workers' unions plan to hold demonstrations in locations throughout Brazil June 9. The purpose of the protests is to denounce recently announced cuts to the country's public education budget.

Protests are slated to occur in cities across the country, including inside and around major public universities as well as at notable public squares and landmarks. Organizers have confirmed that demonstrations will take place at the following locations, among others:

  • Belo Horizonte: Afonso Arinos Square, 17:00

  • Brasilia: National Museum, 09:00

  • Curitiba: Santos Andrade Square, 18:30

  • Porto Alegre: School of Education, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, 17:00

  • Rio de Janeiro: Candelaria Square, 16:00

  • Sao Paulo: Outside the Municipal Theater, 17:00

  • Vitoria: Teatro Universitario, Universidade Federal do Espirito Santo, 16:00

Hundreds of people are likely to participate in most protests, which will probably cause transport and business disruptions around demonstration sites. Heightened security is likely in protest-affected areas. Clashes between police and protesters are unlikely but cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations in protest-affected areas June 9. Heed authorities' instructions.
