Opposition activists cancel planned march in Conakry June 23. Related gatherings remain possible.

Informational

Event

Activists from the opposition National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC) have canceled their plan to protest in Conakry June 23. The FNDC has given itself and the government until June 30 to initiate a dialogue. Should this faiI, further protests are likely from June 30. Nonetheless, related gatherings remain possible in Conakry in the coming hours.

The demonstration was initially called to denounce a current ban on protest and to demand a return to civilian rule earlier than the 36 months set by the junta.

Authorities will likely still deploy additional security personnel to prevent any potential protest from taking place. Clashes with security forces are likely should any protest materialize and if demonstrators ignore police orders to disperse. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely near the protest venue.

Context

The National Committee of Reconciliation and Development (CNRD) announced a ban on gatherings May 13 and said it will remain in place until the start of the election cycle, likely in 2025. The CNRD warned of legal consequences should the order be disregarded. Opposition parties and human rights groups have denounced the measure as illegal. Increased political tensions are likely in the coming months. Opposition supporters may continue defying the government and gather despite the ban.

Advice

Monitor developments closely. Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Depart the area immediately if crowds form. Heed the directives of local security officials.
