Guinea: Ruling military junta's ban on political protests remains in place as of June 4 /update 2

Ruling military junta's ban on political protests remains in place as of June 4; unauthorized demonstrations remain possible.

Informational

Event

The ruling military junta's ban on all demonstrations and political rallies remains in place across Guinea as of June 4. However, unauthorized gatherings and demonstrations remain possible, especially in Conakry, increasing the risk of clashes.

The National Committee of Reconciliation and Development (CNRD) initially announced the ban May 13 and said it will remain in place until the start of the election cycle, likely in 2025. The CNRD warned of legal consequences, should the order be disregarded. Opposition parties and human rights groups have denounced the measure as illegal.

Security personnel fatally shot a protester June 1 during demonstrations denouncing the rising cost of fuel in Conakry. Increased political tensions are likely in the coming months. Opposition supporters may continue defying the government and gather despite the ban. Clashes with security forces are likely should any protest materialize and protesters ignore police orders to disperse.

Advice

Monitor developments closely. Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Depart the area immediately if crowds form. Heed the directives of local security officials.
