Emergency crews responding to wildfire in Rome, Italy, as of June 27. Evacuations ongoing.

Warning

Event

Emergency crews are responding to a wildfire on the eastern outskirts of Rome as of June 27. The fire broke out near the intersection between Via Bosco Marengo and Via la Monachina at around 13:30 June 27. A summer camp and several homes in the affected area have been evacuated by authorities. Dozens of people in the vicinity of the fire have been treated for smoke inhalation, at least two of whom have been taken to hospital. The fire caused the explosion of dozens of gas canisters at a nearby campsite. Authorities have closed roads in the affected area, including Via Aurelia between Via Aurelia Antica and Monchina-Casaloimbroso. The fire has broken out amid an ongoing heatwave across much of the country that is set to continue for several more days. The hot and dry conditions may lead to further fire growth in the coming hours and days.

Emergency responders may close roads in affected areas at short notice depending on evolving wildfire conditions and operational needs. Smoke from the fire could cause poor air quality. Authorities may issue additional mandatory evacuation orders at short notice. The fire could also lead to power supply disruptions.

Advice

Heed any evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will likely cause increased congestion and delays. Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in a "go-bag" that can be easily accessed. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.
