Morocco: Unions to launch nationwide general strike, June 20
Nationwide general strike to take place in Morocco, June 20. Transport and business disruptions, demonstrations likely.
Event
Several unions in Morocco, including the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), the Democratic Labor Organization (ODT), and the Federation of Democratic Trade Unions (FSD), have announced plans for a nationwide general strike, June 20. The purpose of the action is to denounce inflation in the country, particularly with regard to food and fuel prices, and to commemorate the 41st anniversary of the bread riots of June 20, 1981.
The labor action will almost certainly cause major disruptions to a wide spectrum of services, including those in the transport and civil service sectors. It is unclear if the labor action will affect air, ground, and maritime transportation.
Although union leaders have as yet announced no specific plans for associated demonstrations, striking workers will likely stage rallies during the work stoppage. Potential rally locations include central squares and public spaces outside of government offices. Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor any such demonstrations that may materialize. Large crowds and associated security measures, including road closures and other movement restrictions, will probably exacerbate transport disruptions near protest sites. Isolated clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Plan accordingly for disruptions to various services and business operations, as well as for increased employee absenteeism, June 20. Check local media sources for up-to-date information on regional public transport disruptions. Consider alternative transport options to mitigate travel disruptions; allow extra time to reach destinations. Avoid any demonstrations as a routine security precaution; leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
